The 13th COSCOM Association has as one of its key mission to help educate our soldiers and their immediate family members. We offer two scholarships to provide for Soldiers and their families, wartime veterans, and retires of the 13th ESC and its predecessor organizations. Please choose one of the links below for the correct scholarship: SGT Jessica L. Cawvey Memorial Scholarship $1,000The Scholarship Program was initialed with the original Bylaws of the Association in 2005, and in 2010 the Scholarship was named in honor of a distinguished member of the 13th Sustainment Command, Sgt. Jessica L. Cawvey. Once again this year the 13th COSCOM Association partnered with the the Central Texas-Fort Hood Chapter of the Association of the U.S. Army (AUSA) and we presented one $1,000 scholarships to Kiersten Melvin, daughter of 13th COSCOM Association member LTC Matt Melvin. As in the past, this scholarship was available for those planning to enroll in both vocational and traditional programs of study and at both the lower and upper degree levels, award winner Kiersten plans to attend UT-Austin in the Fall. On May 12, 2011 at Club Hood on Fort Hood, TX, CPT Will Messick our Scholarship Committee Chairman presented a $1000 check for the 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) SGT Jessica L. Cawvey Memorial Scholarship to Kiersten Melvin, daughter of LTC Matt Melvin, 13th Coscom Association member 00121. Kiersten will be attending UT-Austin in the Fall.

In May 2010 at Club Hood on Fort Hood, TX, LTC (Ret.) Kent Marquardt, our President presented a $1000 check for the 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) Scholarship too Spc. Amy Lantrip. Amy is attending Central Texas College.

Sgt. Jessica L. Cawvey
Born: Aug. 21, 1983 in Kankakee, IL Died: Oct. 6, 2004 at Camp Fallujah, Iraq Sgt. Jessica L. Cawvey of Normal, Illinois was the daughter of Kevin and Sandra McGlasson Cawvey and mother to Sierra. She graduated from Mahomet-Seymour High in 2001 where Principal Del Ryan said she was "a strong student" with a B-plus average. "She didn't participate in many activities because she was focusing on school," he said. Teacher Tom Shallenberger, said Cawvey was "very self-motivated," which enabled to her to graduate midyear in 2001, a semester ahead of her peers. She served as a peer mentor, according to her school yearbook. Cawvey earned an associate's degree in business in 2003, graduating from Parkland College where she was an outstanding student, winning the college's top honor and making the dean's list several times. She had enlisted in the Illinois Army National Guard to provide the right future for her daughter Sierra, and she went on to study accounting at Illinois State University. She was a junior when her unit the, the 1544th Transportation Company, was mobilized for overseas duty with as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Cawvey was part of a convoy on a main supply route between the Baghdad International Airport and Taquaddum when an improvised explosive device exploded near her truck. Cawvey had not been assigned to go on that mission, however she volunteered so she could be with a comrade who was on her first night mission. Sgt Jessica L. Cawvey was killed at the age 21. For exemplary conduct, efficiency and fidelity during her service, she was awarded The Army Good Conduct, Purple Heart and the Bronze Star medals. |
