13th ESC dedicates GWOT memorial, honors heroes in ‘long overdue’ ceremony
Soldiers, veterans, friends and family of the 13th Sustainment
Command (Expeditionary) saw a long-held idea become reality on
Friday as the unit dedicated its memorial during a ceremony at
Guidon Field. The 13th ESC Memorial Pavilion includes a
monument, a wall of honor inscribed with the names of fallen
servicemembers, a meditation area and a walkway tribute of
engraved bricks. The wall of honor holds black granite plaques inscribed with the names of 106 active-duty and reserve component servicemembers who lost their lives in support of the Global War on Terrorism while serving with the 13th ESC. “They represent a cross-section of America,” Col. Terry Hildner, commander, 13th ESC, said. “They originate from across America, representing 33 states and the territory of Puerto Rico.” [ read all below ]
Fund-raising golf tournament benefits 13th ESC memorial
Current and former Soldiers of the 13th Sustainment Command
(Expeditionary), Central Texas civic leaders and others recently
participated in a best ball golf tournament on the Courses of
Clear Creek at Fort Hood.Held Sept. 16, the tournament involved
15 teams and was the final fund-raiser for the 13th ESC memorial
pavilion. Kent Marquardt, 13th COSCOM Association president,
said the cost for the memorial had been covered. Marquardt was on the winning team in the tournament whose members also included Col. Knowles Atchison, the deputy commanding officer of the 13th ESC, and brothers Brad and Brett Turner of Temple. After being announced the winners of the tournament with a score of 57, Atchison joked that he and Marquardt bought “mulligans” and a special pass to move up 300 yards on a Par 5 hole, and then watched the Turners in amazement. 13th COSCOM Association needs money for Soldier memorial
After more than two years of raising funds, the 13th Corps
Support Command Association is closer to meeting their goal. The
13th COSCOM Association is raising money to help finance a
memorial for the fallen Soldiers of the 13th Sustainment Command
(Expeditionary). About 20 people from the local community,
including many retired servicemembers, attended the fundraising
event at the Hilton Garden Inn in Temple Dec. 8. The planned memorial will honor the men and women from the 13th ESC who have been killed while supporting the Global War on Terrorism. Currently, the unit is on its third deployment providing logistics support for the entire Iraq theater of operations. “The memorial will be complete before July 2010, when the 13th ESC returns home from their Iraq deployment,” said Kent Marquardt, president of the association and a retired lieutenant colonel who retired from the 13th ESC in 2005.
